Measuring using inches

C1: How wide are the polygons?
Use inches to measure the widths: eighths, quarters and halves. Work out the widths without moving the ruler. The ruler can then be used to measure the widths of the hexagon and rectangle.

Recognise fractions

Recognise fractions

C2: Recognise fractions eg 3/8

C3: Identify fractions on a number line

POint at the left hand side
Drag the fraction

Equivalent Fractions

C4: 3/5 = 15/25

Equivalent Fractions Wall

Instructions: Drag the fraction from the left hand side of the fraction wall. See pictures on the left.

C5: Fraction Wall: equivalent fraction diagram with a variety of fractions.

Example of equivalent fractions

Equivalent Fraction lines

C6: Identify three fractions on a number line (0 to 1)
C7: Two random fractions, eg 5ths and 20ths, on anumber line (0 to 1).

Lowest common multiple and highest common factor

C8: The lowest common multiple of two numbers, eg 6 and 9
C9: The highest common factor of two numbers, eg 36 and 27
C10: Cancel fractions to their simplest form
C11: Unknown numerator or denominator

Click inside the table to show or hide the answers.
The bar on the fraction diagram is set to the highest answer revealed: 21 in the above example.

Calculate fractions of amounts

C32: Fractions of amounts in a table and on a fraction diagram
To change the fraction and or amount click on the fraction buttons.

C12: What is one tenth of 100, 30, 500...?
C13: 3/10 of 50, 20, 100...
?
C14: 4/5 of 50, 35, 100...?
C15: 1/5 of 35, 2/3 of 1

C16: Fractions of amounts eg 1/2 of 120, 1/5 of 125

C17: 3/5 of 17, 2/3 of 25

C18: Match the question to the answer

Make matched pairs the same colour.
The pairs could be dragged next to each other

Example of equivalent fractions.

C20: A flexible whiteboard resource which generates 13 different sets of fractions, decimals or percentages; similar to a target board.
There are 13 options:

Select the type of fractions to be generated by clicking on the numbered buttons at the top.
The buttons used to select the type of fractions.

1. Random fraction diagrams 1(half, quarter, fifth, eighth, tenth)
1b. Random fraction diagrams 2 (as above plus third, sixth, ninth)
2. Random fractions 1(half, quarter, fifth, eighth, tenth)
2b. Random fractions 2 (as above plus third, sixth, ninth)
3. Equivalent fraction diagrams (pairs) 4. Equivalent fractions (pairs)
5. Fraction diagrams add up to 1 (pairs) 6. Fractions add up to 1 (pairs)
7. Equivalent fractions and decimals (pairs) 8. Fractions and decimals add up to 1 (pairs)
9. Equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages (threes) 10. Fractions of amounts (threes)
eg 1/4 of 24 = 6
11. Percentages of amounts (threes)
eg 25% of 24 = 6

The buttons usedThe colour of the tiles can be changed. Select one of 8 colours then click on a tile.

The fractions can be grouped by dragging them about.

The fractions can be discarded by dragging them to the bin.

Children can use the resource to match pairs or group them in threes:
eg 27/100 and 0.73 make 1.
eg 40% of 60 = 24

A clock starts when a set of numbers has been generated. The clock can be hidden or shown (click the green clock button). It can be stopped by clicking the 'stop the clock' button!
The clock can be used to see who can group the fractions in the quickest time.

Use decimal notation

Example of Year 4 worksheet

C21: Write decimals on a number line eg Write these decimals on a line from 4 to 6: 5.7, 4.5, 4.1, 5.2, 4.9

C22: Write decimals on a number line eg Write these decimals on a line from 3.9 to 4.1: 3.97, 3.91, 4.01, 3.93, 4.05

Percentages

eg 30% of £50.

Percentages of amounts
Click inside the table to show or hide the answers

Use mental methods to calculate percentages

C23: Percentage of money

C31: Percentages of amounts in a table
1%, 2%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 25%, 40%, 50%, 75%, 90% and 100%
Work out mentally or with a calculator.

Estimate percentages

C24: Estimate the percentage of a line that is shaded.

C25: Interpret pie charts: estimate the size of each slice.

C27: Ratio and proportion generator

Generate different numbers of red squares and blue circles. The ratio of red to blue can be changed. The squares and circles can be scattered randomly or put neatly into rows. Use this resource to illustrate how ratio and proportion works.

The buttons
The ratio buttons

The buttons from the left:
1. Generate the shapes in random positions.
2. Place the shapes in rows.
3. Show/hide the number generator panel.
4. Show/hide the ratio.
5. Show/hide the fraction.
6. Show/hide the percentage.
7. Generate a random number of squares and circles.

The slider determines the number of groups of each shape.

These sliders determine the ratio of red squares to blue circles.

eg 9:36 = 1:4

eg 12:32 = ? : 8
